Proposed EU Amendments to the Directive 94/62/EC on Packaging and Packaging Waste to 2025

Today the EU announced the Circular Economy Packaging, as part of this Package the EU have made proposals to amend the Packaging Waste Directive. Looking at the detail of the proposal, they have suggested new challenging Packaging Recycling Targets to 2025 and 2030.
By 31 December 2025 a minimum of 65% (currently 55%) by weight of all packaging waste will be prepared for reuse and recycled. The following minimum 2025 targets by weight for preparing for reuse and recycling will be met regarding the following specific materials contained in packaging waste:
(i) 55 % of plastic;
(ii) 60% of wood;
(iii) 75% of ferrous metal;
(iv) 75% of aluminium;
(v) 75% % of glass;
(vi) 75% of paper and cardboard –
By 31 December 2030 a minimum of 75% by weight of all packaging
waste will be prepared for reuse and recycled. The following minimum targets by weight
(i) 75% of wood
(ii) 85% of ferrous metal;
(iii) 85% of aluminium;
(iv) 85% of glass;
(v) 85% of paper and cardboard
