UK Packaging Recycling – initial figures suggest strong growth in 2016
The Environment Agency has released the interim (subject to confirmation) UK Packaging Recycling perfomance figures for 2016 showing a strong year of growth. The interim market figures, give the sector a welcome boost, following a year where general recycling performance have fallen back slightly, with much public criticism and debate.
So good news especially for Packaging Recycling in Plastic, Steel and Aluminium which have posted very strong growth figures. All other materials have shown steady growth and show Obligated Businesses in the UK having clearly met the increased packaging recycling targets for 2016. Annual Packaging Recycling Figures, in tonnes, below.

The growth results from a fairly complex series of market variables, including the weakening £/$ exchange rate in the later part of 2016, demand for UK material from International Markets has been strong. Some administrative additions / issues were also resolved by the Agencies thoughout 2016 certainly helped.
The outlook for 2017 remains positive with all packaging recycling material markets, both domestic and export showing strong demand and PRNs markets steady. The reliance on the export markets to meet the annual targets remain an ongoing concern.
